Admission in the M. Psy program at ADLER is the responsibility of the Program Admissions Committee, who reviews all submitted applications and bases its recommendation for any given applicant on her or his fulfillment of the Academic Requirements, their demonstrated proficiency in the English language, the nature and quality of the Statement of Intent, interviews with faculty members as appropriate, and the results of the applicant’s participation in the mandatory pre-admission course.
No single factor will determine admissibility; rather, it is the collective judgment of the Committee members as to the likelihood of the applicant’s success in the program and their assessment of the candidate’s potential to apply his/her acquired knowledge and experiences in live workplaces and organizations that will govern a recommendation for admission.
ADLER reserves the right to grant or deny admission to any applicant at its sole discretion.
Applicants for the M.Psy degree with ADLER are required to possess the following:
1. 4-year undergraduate degree with a 3.0 cumulative GPA (on a 4-point scale) or better
2. Completion of ADLER’s GP-100 Thriving in Graduate School course (cost is included in $75 CDN application fee).
3. English language proficiency, demonstrated by either:
a. English being the applicant’s first language;
b. Completion of the applicant’s undergraduate degree at a university in which the language of instruction and examination is English; or
c. A formal assessment by one of the following organizations to the respective indicated standard:
i. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum overall score of 580 with a Test of Written English component score of 5 is required for paper-based tests; an overall score of 93 with a writing/speaking component score of 22 is required for Internet-based tests.
ii. Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB). A minimum score of 85 is required.
iii. International English Language Testing System (IELTS). A minimum score of 7.0 (Academic) is required.
iv. The Certificate of Proficiency in English (COPE). A minimum score of 76 (with at least 22 in each component and 32 in the writing component) is required.
v. Academic Preparation Course, International ESL Program, Continuing Studies, University of Toronto. A minimum final grade of B in Level 60 is required.
4. An applicant who presents with an undergraduate GPA of less than 3.0 may be offered either full or provisional admission, subject to the approval of the Academic Vice-President, and based on a compelling written submission by a recommending faculty member who will assume responsibility for the student’s academic support should s/he require it. If the applicant is applying to either Psychology or Psychotherapy, admission may be subject to completion of the Transitional Equivalency program, described below.
1. A 3- to 5-page Statement of Intent, which comprises an autobiographical reflection essay outlining how the applicant’s personal history and life experience informs both a potential research focus area in psychology studies, and their calling to a future practice as a psychologist.
2. Personal interview with two faculty members with an overall assessment of 4 or 5 (on a 5- point scale). If one of the two faculty members recommends acceptance and the other recommends denial (i.e. 3 or less), the applicant will be invited for an interview with a third faculty member.
3. Two letters of recommendation from arms-length referees, one of which should be from an academic referee. Ideally, at least one of the referees should know the applicant in a context related to psychological or social services.
4. For applicants who do not present with a 4-year undergraduate degree with a major in Psychology, s/he may be granted provisional admission subject to satisfactory completion of an Adler-designed Transitional Equivalency (TQ) program
a. In certain cases – for example, those who are missing a minimal number of undergraduate credits to have had a Psychology major – the applicant may be admitted to the Master of Psychology program with Concurrent TQ. This means that the applicant may take Master-level courses together, along with the designated TQ courses.
b. In other cases – for example, those who present with at least 2 credits in Psychology AND either have a 3-year undergraduate degree or whose 4-year undergraduate degree is in a discipline other than Psychology – the applicant may be granted provisional admission to the Master of Psychology program with prerequisite TQ. This means that the applicant, in general, may NOT take Master-level courses together with the designated TQ courses. Certain exceptions may be made with the explicit approval of all of the Director of Transitional Equivalency program, the student’s academic advisor (usually the instructor of the Portfolio Seminar), and the Faculty Dean.
5. Admission decisions are made by a consensus agreement among Psychology Core Faculty members acting as Admissions Committee. At a minimum this includes the Faculty Dean, Dean of Students, Director of Clinical Training, Director of Transitional Equivalency program, and instructor of the Portfolio Seminar.

*Applicants who live more than a 60-minute commute from the school may elect to attend GPS100 via remote connection (Skype plus browser) at the option of the instructor, subject to technological availability for any particular session. Under exceptional circumstances, a student may be provisionally admitted to Adler and granted a deferral of the GPS100 requirement until the first trimester of admission. Should such a student fail to achieve an assessment of “Likely to succeed” or “Likely to succeed with support” their offer of admission may be withdrawn.
